Background of the study
Hashtag neologisms have become a defining feature of Nigerian digital communication on Twitter. These newly coined expressions emerge rapidly as users create and disseminate hashtags that encapsulate social, cultural, and political sentiments (Olufemi, 2023). This study examines how hashtag neologisms evolve and influence language practices in Nigerian digital spaces. By comparing various Twitter trends, the research highlights the processes behind the creation, adaptation, and widespread adoption of neologisms. These linguistic innovations reflect the interplay between technology, creativity, and socio-cultural dynamics, resulting in expressions that resonate widely with users (Ibrahim, 2024). The study investigates the semantic, morphological, and pragmatic dimensions of hashtag neologisms, assessing how they challenge and expand traditional language norms. This inquiry contributes to a deeper understanding of digital discourse and its role in driving language evolution in Nigeria (Akinyele, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the increasing prominence of hashtag neologisms in Nigerian Twitter trends, there is limited empirical research on their formation and impact. Existing literature tends to focus on general neologism creation without addressing the unique dynamics of hashtag usage. This gap hampers our understanding of how these new expressions shape digital communication and language evolution. The study seeks to fill this void by providing a comparative analysis of hashtag neologisms, examining their characteristics, usage patterns, and socio-cultural significance (Chinaza, 2024).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insight into the innovative role of hashtag neologisms in shaping Nigerian digital communication. The findings will benefit linguists, digital media analysts, and policymakers by elucidating how new lexical forms emerge and influence language practices in dynamic online environments (Okeke, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses solely on hashtag neologisms within Nigerian Twitter trends. It is limited to digital linguistic analysis and does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language usage.
